We rarely experience one singular emotion, but often a cocktail of different emotions at the same time. We are complicated beings and we are capable of feeling multiple emotions at once. Accepting this emotional complexity is key to self-awareness and emotional intelligence. These intense negative experiences can stick with us for months, years, or even an entire lifetime.

But we learn to live with them, and we learn to experience positive emotions again even when these negative experiences are always lingering in the background.

Struggling with your feelings often leads to more suffering.

This line immediately struck me because it recognizes the emotional complexity of living. Positive emotions and negative emotions can co-exist in your mind at the same time. While it can be healthy to label your emotions to accept them and let them go, sometimes there is too much emotional complexity to adequately give our emotions a label. Just feel it.

Responsibility is the most mature behavior any of us can develop. We just need to learn to manage them better.. And it can be pleasurable too. I spent far too many years avoiding this kind of commitment to myself, preferring instead to blame others and external situations for how I felt.
